The United States Hunter/Jumper Association Inaugural Emerging Athlete National Finals was held at Maplewood Jan. 8-10, 2010. It was an overwhelming success! The three-day competition encompassed learning opportunities from world reknown clinicians.
- Dr. Midge Leitch, head of radiology at New Bolton Vet Center in Pennsylvania, discussed conformation and potential soundness issues with the riders regarding their loaned mounts for the weekend.
- Mindy Bower, colt starter and outstanding horsewoman from Colorado worked with the riders on ground work explaining how to understand and correct behavioral problems in hand.
- Olympian Peter Wylde came from his home base in The Netherlands to coach the contestants on their mounts for the three days.
- Olympian Melanie Taylor Smith oversaw the activities and organized the events. A written test as well as barn duties, mucking and grooming were part of the curriculum.
- Grand Prix competitor Eliza Shuford oversaw the barn management and was the winning Chef d'equipe for the nations cup team competition.
The parents and riders met at Julie's home Friday night for a question/answer reception with Peter Wylde. Saturday evening the participants, parents, staff, committee and clinicians had a wonderful dinner at the host hotel, The Peppermill. After many great speeches by the finalists, a naming of the teams and chef 'd equipes, there was a Calcutta to bet on the final team placings for Sunday. The final day was thrilling, with all the horses and riders being in top form.
The co-winners were Carly Anthony & Ricky Neal. They will receive a month of advanced training. A press conference followed. Everyone flew home safely with memories of a special learning experience under their belt!
Thank-you to Dover as well as our local sponsors: Sierra Feed & Saddlery, Seabuck, Fast Frame on Moana, Triple M Construction and Joe & Lynn Mullins. Also The Peppermill Hotel/Casino who was the host hotel and gave us great rates! We are grateful and couldn't have done it without you!!!
