The Staff at Maplewood Stables

Maplewood Stables is the premier equestrian center in Nevada and the surrounding area. Our staff is comprised of experts in the field, and we have produced such nationally and internationally acclaimed riders and horses such as Vinton Karrasch, By The Bay and Princeton. In addition, numerous Maplewood students have gone on to be successful professionals in the equine industry.

Julie B. Winkel, Owner

Julie Winkel is one of the first United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) Certified Trainers, a USHJA Emerging Athlete Program Talent Scout and Clinician, a United States Equestrian Federation R-rated judge, as well as a Canadian Equestrian Federation judge. She's held a license since 1984, and has judged the most prestigious shows in the country, including Devon, Harrisburg, the Washington International, The National, Capital Challenge, The Hampton Classic, Upperville, Wellington, the US Pony Finals & USEF/Sallie B. Wheeler Hunter Breeding Championships. She's designed courses and judged the New England Equitation Finals, the ASPCA Maclay Finals, as well as the USEF Medal Finals (2010 with George Morris).

Julie has trained and shown hunters and jumpers to the top levels, nationally and internationally. She has many Grand Prix show jumping wins as well as hunter championships throughout her career.

She is the Chair of the USHJA Officials Education Committee, the Co-Chair of the USEF Licensed Officials Committee, a member of the USHJA Emerging Athletes Program Task Force, the USHJA Trainer Certification Program Committee, the USHJA Officials Committee and the USHJA Zone 10 Jumper Committee. She's also Chair of the USEF Continuing Education Committee.

Julie owns and operates Maplewood Stables, Inc., in Reno, Nevada. Maplewood is a 150-acre training, sales and breeding facility. Maplewood stands two stallions, Grand Prix jumpers-Osilvis and Cartouche Z. In addition to judging, Julie gives clinics throughout the country and writes the monthly column "Conformation Clinic" for PRACTICAL HORSEMAN  magazine.                                               


Kevin Winkel, Assistant Trainer


With multiple Grand Prix wins on Osilvis and Cartouche Z, Kevin has returned to work Maplewood, riding, training and teaching. He spent two years working on the East Coast for Olympian Joe Fargis, as well as a year on the West Coast working for Grand Prix rider Rusty Stewart. Kevin currently has a string of successful jumpers at a variety of levels, including Grand Prix winner Osophia, a Maplewood homebred by Osilvis.               

Andrew Jayne, Assistant Trainer

A Maplewood Horse Industry Training Program graduate in 2009, Andrew worked for Rusty Stewart for three years in Southern Califronia after spending a year working for a private client in San Diego. He was a part of the United States Modern Pentathlon team during his junior years, completing three World Championships in Egypt, Bulgaria and Taiwan, two Pan Am Championships in Canada and Argentina, as well as three National Championships. Andrew continues to compete, primarily in the jumper ring, and rides, teaches and trains at Maplewood where he specializes in young horses. 

Corinne Shaw, Assistant Trainer

Corinne Shaw is an assistant rider and trainer at Maplewood; teaching, riding, and training client horses as well as the Maplewood homebreds. She got her start here, riding with and learning from Julie since she was 12. Corinne has many show miles in both the hunter and jumper rings and continues to compete.

Ana Forssell, Assistant Trainer

Ana Forssell is an assistant rider and trainer at Maplewood; teaching, coaching the Interscholastic Equestrian Association Team, riding, and training client horses as well as the Maplewood homebreds. Ana grew up in California and has competed at the highest levels, from ponies to equitation and hunters and jumpers.

Marcella Lawwill, Assistant Trainer

Marcella Lawwill is an assistant rider and trainer at Maplewood; teaching, riding, and training client horses as well as the Maplewood homebreds. She is also involved in the Maplewood breeding program, working with the stallions, broodmares and foals. Marcy, who grew up in California, has traveled the world working with young horses and riding and training with some of the world's top horsemen.
